What is Cosmetic Greenwashing

Ask yourself why do you want to buy an organic product? Because you know that organic products cannot contain conventional, potentially harmful, harsh agricultural chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers.

When you buy certified organic skin care products, you're paying for high concentrations of pure, plant-based ingredients that enrich and nourish your skin. Certified organic essential oils, therapeutic grade cold pressed nut and seed oils, herbal extracts, essential fatty acids, omegas, natural vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, plant-based liposomes along with antioxidants are just some of the ingredients you will find in certified organic skin care. These ingredients are straight from nature and are formulated to work together synergistically to give you naturally radiant and healthy skin. 

Potentially harmful agricultural chemicals are contaminating our environment, poisoning our precious water supplies, and destroying the value of fertile farmland. Certified organic standards do not permit the use of potentially, toxic chemicals in farming and require responsible management of healthy soil and biodiversity.

If a Brand is not certified organic then it is not organic

A Brand may use one certified organic ingredient and claim to be organic when all the other ingredients are not organic. A Brand may state 'we use organic where possible', again this is not organic. A Certified Organic Product or Brand has to have a paper trail for every single ingredient, each ingredient has to have a current Organic Certificate, each ingredient has to be approved by the organic governing body (in each territory / country) to be allowed to be incorporated into a formulation. Where (manufacturing facility / Lab) the product is produced has to be assessed also be to an approved organic manufacturing facility. This is a lengthly and therefore costly process but this ensures your are getting an 'organic' product. The logo verifies this is a Certified Organic Product. (See below for an example of Australia Certified Organic Logo.)

I believe that certified organic ingredients are superior for the skincare properties they deliver. Nothing produced in a laboratory can beat an organic cold pressed plant oil, a rich botanical butter, a high performance plant extract, a freshly distilled flower water (hydosol), nor a the beautiful aroma of an essential oil. Prevalent mainstream cosmetics are often pumped full of water, cheap fillers, animal by-products, synthetic skin irritants and artificial fragrances. Like plants we are an 'organism' [an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form] therefore our skin recognises and readily assimilates the active ingredients from plant cells, rather than treating them as synthetic foreign bodies. 

Plants contain compounds (chemicals) which work synergistically with each other – a rose flower is an excellent illustration, the flower alone may contain over 500 different chemical compounds. It will be almost impossible for a combination of synthetic ingredients to mimic such elaborate and complex plant compounds. 

Green Cosmetic Science certified organic

Formula Botanica (Accredited Online Learning in Organic Cosmetic Science) have formulated (sorry!) a definition of green cosmetic chemistry “The Utilisation of a set of principals that reduces or eliminates the usage or generation of hazardous substances in the design manufacturer and application of chemical products.”

It’s about being sustainable from the your sourcing of ingredients, they way in which the products are manufactured, packaged and used by the consumer. The end products should be biodegradable and not harmful to the environment. The core guiding principals:

  • Prevent Waste // This prevents pollution to soil air and water
  • Economical Use of Chemicals // By limiting the production of secondary chemicals which will not be in the final product as this will need to be disposed of. 
  • Use Fewer Hazardous Chemicals // Eco Toxicity can be caused for example by Zinc Oxide which can end up in our waterways. Zinc Oxide is not biodegradable and accumulates in our oceans  read our blog
  • Carbon Footprint // In the sourcing manufacturing and dispatching of product being energy efficient in the running of the business
  • Renewal and Sustainable Raw Ingredients /// Not all natural ingredient are sustainable a good example is Rosewood Essential Oil is extracted from wood chips from a species of evergreen tree, this is an endangered tree.

Sustainability is not a fad, or a marketing greenwashing term. When Brands promote that their core principals are governed by sustainability, consumers rightly so, expect full transparency of sustainability programs, and they expect the commitment to be ongoing and to change according to the latest ingredients available, manufacturing processes, and best practices. What is Greenwashing?

Green Marketing is the practice used by companies to make unsubstantiated claims about the origin and the environmental sustainability of their products. In Australia, companies do not have to be certified to label their products as "organic". The latest market report from industry and certifying group Australian Organic Ltd. Australia's certified organic industry is expected to be worth more than $2 billion by 2018 but it is fighting to ensure fake organic claims do not damage its reputation. Australian certified organic logo

The market report said that "two-thirds of organic shoppers rely on the word 'organic' on the product label to assure them it was organic", however, it said that "an increasing percentage check for a certification logo on the product (44%, up from 34% in 2014)".

Certified producers and processors are concerned that consumers are getting ripped-off and paying premium prices for products that do not meet Australian organic standards.

Consumers who want to protect themselves from greenwashing claims should look for a genuine logo which proves the product has been independently certified. For example, ACO who have have strict standards for beauty products.
