My Go-to Face Mask (from the Pantry)

Face Masks can be hydrating, soothing, deep cleaning and provide some exfoliant effect — if only in the act of removing them. For me it is part of the self care ritual of taking bath, a weekly soak and some much needed me time to switch off and relax.

If you have or are prone to oily skin you can add a teaspoon of bentonite clay to the recipe. Clays depending on their structure, either swell up on contact with water (absorbent) or bind particles to themselves (adsorbent) basically they help remove dirt, grime and impurities from the skin (not toxins!)

THE INGREDIENTS

ORGANIC HONEY

Is a Natural Humectant - simply put it attracts and traps moisture on the skin, honey contains vitamins and minerals including: Calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. A potent source of antioxidants - chrysin, pinobansin, vitamin C, catalase and pinocembrin and to top all this off it has anti-bacterial properties.

ORGANIC SPIRULINA POWDER

Is actually a pond scum! Blue-green algae is known as a cyanobacteria, which is a type of bacteria that lives in water and get their energy through photosynthesis. Is known to be one of the richest sources of nutrients including protein, phytonutrients, gamma linolenic acid (GLA), carotenoids and chlorophyll also contains powerful antioxidants including Beta carotene. Fatty acids, especially GLA, are known to promote the structural integrity of skin and decrease skin inflammation. That combined with being a rich source of antioxidants makes spirulina highly effective in the fight against free radicals. As a natural antimicrobial, this blue-green algae actually kills off candida (aka yeast), which is often the underlying cause of acne breakouts.

ORGANIC TUMERIC POWDER

It’s an anti-inflammatory powerhouse: Turmeric is rich in curcumin, a natural active ingredient that promotes the healing and brightening of skin. Curcumin a compound found in turmeric, can actually help speed up the healing of wounds. A study conducted in 2007 found that the compound aids in skin regeneration in a variety of respects, from boosting collagen production and diminishing psoriasis to protecting against free radicals.

ORGANIC MATCHA POWDER

Matcha is a potent, high quality green tea. This tea is produced from nutrient dense young leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plants. It is carefully cultivated in the shade so as to preserve antioxidant levels and chlorophyll. It is then harvested and ground into a fine powder to be used in tea, food and skin care. Contains catechins, an organic compound that is simply the strongest and most beneficial type of antioxidant around. Matcha has a catechin called EGCg which is so potent it is recognized for cancer fighting actions. Has good anti-inflammatory properties so matcha is an excellent skin calmative as well.

COCONUT WATER

Rich in nutrients and vitamins - contains vitamins A, C and K and is an excellent source of the B-complex vitamins. In addition to protein and iron, coconut water has high levels of potassium, which promotes hydration balance and calcium, which promotes skin growth. Vitamin C helps with collagen formation.

Has incredible hydrating qualities and is highly effective as a cleanser, it naturally moisturizes without adding excess oil and, the presence of potassium helps with hydration balance for the fluids and electrolyte levels in your body. acts an anti-inflammatory, detoxifier and an anti-microbial—all of which work to decrease incidences of acne. coconut water can decrease the excess oils on your skin, which reduces breakouts.
