How to Make Turmeric 'Golden' Paste

I love turmeric I am rather obsessed with it, it was the first ingredient I absolutely knew would be included into my HERO [face] serum launching this year - I PROMISE my friends it is coming. Turmeric offers beneficial properties when applied topically [to the skin] and when consumed. It's all about inflammation, Turmeric helps decrease inflammation by strongly inhibiting the enzyme that is involved in the inflammation response.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE BENEFITS OF TURMERIC

One of the most important discoveries in cancer research is the existence of cancer stem cells. Not all cancer cells can spread and seed new tumors—only cancer stem cells are capable of this, creating the foundations for tumour development, progression, metastasis, and unfortunately drug resistance. Cancer stem cells are highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Cancer stem cells comprise a very small proportion of the overall tumor cell population: about 1 in 1000. They are characterised by stem cell properties such as self-renewal and the ability to differentiate into all cell types found in a particular cancer sample. The failure to eradicate cancer stem cells during the course of therapy is said to be the driving force for tumor recurrence and metastasis.

A recent study published in the journal Anticancer Research Natural Products That Target Cancer Stem Cells” identified the top 25 foods in this category, along with their associated cytotoxic compounds, and guess what turmeric is one of the top 6 anti-cancer foods.

Numerous studies show that turmeric, and its most active agent curcumin, inhibit cancer cell proliferation, suppress angiogenesis, and kill cancer stem cells.

A study in the journal Anticancer Research revealed that turmeric’s primary polyphenol, curcumin, has the ability to selectively target cancer stem cells while having little to no toxicity for normal stem cells—which are essential for tissue regeneration and longevity.

One of this spice’s most notable characteristics is that it is effective against multi-drug resistant cancer, most likely because it neutralises cancer stem cells.

In 2015, researchers from the United Kingdom demonstrated for the first time that curcumin is not only an effective adjunct to conventional chemotherapy, but that it may be even more effective on its own—and about a hundred times less toxic than chemotherapy.

How To Make Turmeric Paste

If like me you're a busy parent, or carer trying to juggle work with 'life' commitments you're more likely to try to incorporate something new into your life if it's quick and easy to do! This ticks both boxes. Why turmeric paste? once you have made the paste you can store it in your refrigerator for up to 1 to 2 months and you can add it to a variety of stews, soups, risottos, smoothies, juices, tea, and golden milk!

I make two variations of the turmeric paste - I follow the method below but add pure, raw manuka honey (from New Zealand with MGO 263) this is active honey which has been independently tested. I add the honey at step 3, this is the golden paste, we as a family, eat straight off a teaspoon daily as a healthy supplement boost. I also use coconut water instead of water because studies show that coconut water may help lower blood pressure and potentially decrease the risk of blood clots forming in your arteries. It's also a good source of potassium. It has been shown that Potassium can lower blood pressure in people with high or normal blood pressure

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup organic turmeric powder (125 mls)
  • 1 cup coconut water (250 mls) you may need to add a little bit more to get the desired paste consistency
  • 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper (7.5 mls) the compound piperine found in black pepper enhances the bio-availability of curcumin by 2000%
  • 1/4 cup (70 ml) organic, un-refined, virgin Coconut Oil alternatively if you do not like the taste of coconut try organic cold pressed Olive Oil.
  • Optional Honey (2 teaspoons) or try nutmeg, cinnamon or cardamom (1 teaspoon)

METHOD

  1. Place coconut water and turmeric in a small saucepan over low to medium heat.
  2. Stir constantly until you have a thick paste, approximately 7 to 8 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and whisk in coconut oil, black pepper (add honey if you choose to now)
  4. Cool and put into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
  5. Store in the fridge.
  6. It lasts for 1-2 months.
  7. Dilute and consume 1-2 teaspoons of the turmeric paste per day in warm water, juices teas, golden milk, nut butter, stir-fries dressings, stews and anything you can think of! You can even just eat a teaspoon of the (with honey as it tastes better!) paste directly.

Until next time..

Be human, be kind, be you.
